To Thine Own Self Be True

"Self-portraiture is a singular in-turned art. Something eerie lurks in its fingering of the edge between seer and seen." - Julian Bell

Summer Fruit

Here in the northeastern corner of the US, it's berry picking season. Ripe and delicious strawberries and blueberries, raspberries and blackberries are ready for the taking. Fruit has a long and interesting history as a subject in art. In the Baroque era, painters would depict lavish bounties of exotic fruits and other delicious delights for patrons to essentially show off their wealth to others. Many a student and teacher alike will test their skills with a simple fruit still life, and contemporary creators are still tackling the subject with a new eye, and a new twist.

What's in season where you live? If you have any fruit related artwork you'd like to share with our readers, please leave a link in the comments!

All the Colors of the Rainbow

Every season has a color palette. The earthy tones of Autumn, the muted whites and pale blues of winter, the cheery pastels of Spring, and the full-on, technicolor vibrancy of Summer. This week's blog post is celebrating the audacity of color in art and artists unafraid to go for broke.

If you aren't afraid of color in your art, let's see it in the comments section! Post a link to your site or a particular piece that shines with all of the colors of the rainbow.

Spring Picnic

This weekend, many Americans will be gathering to celebrate Memorial Day with their family and friends. Burgers on the grill, homemade salads and fresh slices of watermelon make for a perfect feast for all generations. Considering that Fine Art Friday is an international movement, it would be interesting to hear about how you enjoy a good picnic wherever you live. What foods or traditions are typical staples to the festivities for you and your family?
